Due north of Lake Burton, just across the North Carolina line, stands Standing Indian Mountain, which at 5,499 feet is the highest mountain south of the Smokies. Just in front of it is Big Scaly Mountain (5,200 feet), where on the clearest of days, a hiker can catch a glimpse of Lake Burton at the upper left. To the right, behind the limb, is Tate City (population 32), perhaps the most remote settlement in Georgia. The high quality of the water in Lake Burton is due to the fact that the watershed of the Tallulah River originates in these mountains which lie at the center of the Southern Nantahala Wilderness . . . by Mike Maffett. |
