President's Comments We all owe Bill Bomar, his Officers and Directors a big THANK YOU for the job they have done over the last two years. Bill's leadership brought peace to the LBCA, enabling his team to set goals and achieve objectives that will constitute a high water mark for years to come. The LBCA Membership elected me as President and Roger Hansen as Vice President at the business meeting on August 18. Our terms will expire in August 2004. Newly elected members to the Board of Directors are Tom Fisher (2005), Dick Diedrich (2005), Crawford Grice (2005), Bill Markert (2004) and Ray Kunzer (2003). Your officers and directors will meet Sunday, September 15 to set up teams, assign responsibilities, define a preliminary agenda and establish objectives for the next two years. We will share these items with you in the November Newsletter. Thank you all for another safe summer on the lake. Play, be aware and be kind. My email is meluskey@eudoramail.com should you need to reach me. Ben Meluskey LBCA Is Assured Of A County Commissioner History was made on Tuesday, August 20 when Eston Melton (D) and Frank Bean (R) won primary elections for Post 3 of the Rabun County Commission. Eston and Frank, who are both LBCA members will oppose each other in the November elections . . . your vote in Rabun County is making a difference. The best of luck to each of our candidates! Cherokee Landing & LaPrades A great deal of what was Cherokee Landing is gone. Buildings are flattened and all one can see are the skeletal remains of the boat slips. Charles Buckley, Buckley Development, recently stated that the project appears to be on target. As to the LaPrades project, Jim Adams, Tricord Development, indicated in mid-August that there were still a few important issues that needed to be resolved before closing occurs and the project begins. In late August, Robert Nichols indicated substantial progress had been made against all outstanding issues. Robert stated that the Restaurant and Cabins will shut down after lunch on September 15 while the Marina will close on September 15 and then re-open for business on September 16 with Tricord's involvement. 2002 Lake Burton Fun Run And Its Future The 2002 fun run on June 29 was a great success with over 500 participants. Ben Watkins, a student who runs for Western Carolina University, won the race in a time of 10:45. Wallace Nichols was awarded the Ed Fike Community Service Award for his life long commitment to the Lake Burton Community. Additional great news for all you runners is that Robert Nichols will chair the 2003 Lake Burton Fun Run! There will be a race! Wildcat VFD Cookout The cookout at Wildcat VFD on Saturday, July 13 was wet and wild. The volunteer firemen served over 500 of Pat Marcellino's famous fried chicken dinners while Mother Nature delivered over one and one-half inches of rain during the afternoon. Lake Burtonites were scurrying in and out of the firehouse so fast the chicken was gone before 2:00 P.M., setting a new record. Maybe we all eat faster in the rain. Tour Of Homes Another Success Over 100 volunteers moved over 400 attendees to the four homes on the Tour of Homes without incident. Final numbers are not yet in but it looks like approximately $10,000 was raised for the three Volunteer Fire Departments that service Lake Burton. Thanks to all the workers and the Co-Chairs of the event (Steve Barrett, Linda Dixon and Linda Thompson) for all of their hard work. Special thanks to Sandy and Billy Browning, Barbara and Charlie Brundage, Lynn and Larry Stevens and Ron Scharpo for sharing their homes so freely. Please start thinking about sharing your home next year. Jumpin' Good Time At The Bluegrass Party Picnic baskets, tablecloths and even silver candelabra filled Fred's Shed the evening of July 27 . . . and Curtis Blackwell's band had things a jumpin'. Almost 200 people listened and danced and enjoyed desert supplied by Glen Ella Springs Resort. Some of the jumpin' was caused by an intruder . . . a copperhead with an ear for music who decided to join the party. Wowee. LBCA Golf Tournament Produces Winners A field of 94 players participated in the 11th Annual LBCA Golf Tournament on August 2nd at Kingwood Resort. Winning First Place, were Roger Harrison, Jeff Jackson, Johnny Cannon and Dave Cowan; finishing in Second Place were Cliff Lafevers, Kevin Woodard, Bill McClure and Ray Sears; and, in Third Place were a group of high school students sponsored by Regions Bank, Jack Green, Mathew Barker, Johnathan Long and Neal York. Preliminary results indicate the charitable event will net over $13,000 for the benefit of the Lakes, Tallulah-Persimmon and Wildcat Volunteer Fire Departments . . . the real winners. Thanks to all of the participants, to all the contributors (see enclosure) and to all the LBCA members who worked so hard to make the tournament a success; Tom Fischer, Linda Thompson, Roger Hansen, Jack Moss, Chris Hendricks, Marie Gillespie, Joni Moore, Fred Hatterick, Rick Waterhouse, M.A. Whitney, Raney Whitney, Pat Thompson and VFD volunteers. Thanks

Laurel Lodge Road Recycle Center Open Weekends The Rabun County recycle center on Laurel Lodge Road is open for business at least until the fall, and maybe longer . . . the Board of Commissioners has yet to decide. Hours are 12:00 - 6:00 on Friday; 8:00 - 6:00 on Saturday and Sunday; and 8:00 - 12:00 on Monday morning. Lets keep our new facility sparkling and not leave trash outside the center when it is closed. Leaving trash when the facility is closed is a misdemeanor subject to a $500 fine as well as imprisonment/public service. Please advise all your friends and visitors because Rabun County will search trash to identify offenders. |
