President’s Comments

On September 15, your Board of Directors completed assignment of individual officers and directors to the LBCA’s ongoing activities and events. Those assignments are reflected in the enclosed listing.

In a very significant action, the Board of Directors approved a one time solicitation from the membership to fund the construction of standpipes throughout the lake.  Construction of the standpipes is extremely important in that they will insure an ample supply of water for firefighting regardless of the water level of the lake . . . details will follow toward the end of November.

The Board also established a new committee to study and evaluate growth in the area and the impact that growth is having on the quality of our environment.

Normal housekeeping matters covered at the meeting included approval of the minutes of previous board and member meetings, a calendar of events for 2003, the allocation of funds to our fire departments and the review and approval of the association’s 2003 Budget.

I hope each of you has a fantastic holiday season!

Laurel Lodge Recycle Center Winter Hours

The Laurel Lodge Recycle Center will be open on Sundays all winter. The county had scheduled closure of the center on November 18. The LBCA and Rabun Homeowner representatives presented over 250 signatures to the County Commissioners on October 22 to keep the center open throughout the winter on a part time basis . . . they approved the request!  Thanks to all of you who signed petitions, called and sent fax or e-mail messages.

This is an example of what we can accomplish when we work together.  Your vote and influence in Rabun County helps us all to a more meaningful management of our future.

Fire Department Study

This past spring the LBCA approved the partial funding of a study of our fire departments to be conducted by Donald Fryer & Associates.

The study, primarily funded by Rabun County, covers all of the county’s fire departments with the stated goal of lowering ISO ratings around the lake. The rating service will be visiting the county, and in particular our fire boat, on November 6.  The target date for the study’s completion is year end 2002.

New Georgia Power Rules

Some very important information was supplied by Georgia Power Company in the last issue of North Georgia Currents. Trampolines in the lake are to be considered a floating platform as is a floating dock . . . you are only allowed to have one! Also note that Swim Buoys are allowed in the water only when you and/or your guest(s) are actually swimming! Unattended buoys will be removed.

Praise For The Rabun County Hospital

Biff Wilson, an LBCA Member who is on the Board of Directors of the DeKalb Medical Center, recently told a group of people that Rabun County Hospital (RCH) was a great place to get health care. He compared the timing of emergency care at the hospital, which is immediate, to the timing of emergency care at a major city hospital.  Long time LBCA member, John O’Neill, supported Biff’s view, stating that his experience as a patient at RCH was outstanding and that “it’s my first choice for treatment”.  It appears RCH is making a real turnaround in the services they provide and at this time the primary goal of RCH is to increase revenue.  Concerned citizens have created the Rabun Medical Foundation to help RCH become the most viable health care facility in the mountains.  Please contact Biff Wilson at 706-782-9953 or write to the foundation at P.O. Box 1187, Clayton, GA  30525 for further information.

A New Fire Truck

Thanks to the LBCA’s continued financial support, the Tallulah-Persimmon fire department was able to buy a used fire engine from Rockdale County - significantly upgrading their equipment. This engine provides a lot more fire fighting power for the north end of the lake.
