Lake Burton 2019/20 Drawdown

(Following is the notice from Georgia Power Company's Land Management Office for this winter's lake drawdown.)

September 12, 2019

Dear Lake Resident

I want to take this opportunity to notify you of our annual drawdown on Lake Burton scheduled for November 1st.  Every year Lake Burton is drawn down in the fall to accommodate the historically high rainfall months.  This drawdown is called the “Winter Rule Curve” and is a part of the requirements of our License to generate electricity with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Lake Burton “Winter Rule Curve” annual drawdown schedule:

November 1, 2019 – starts down gradually from Normal (1865.0 elevation)
December 31, 2019 – 7 feet down (1858.0 elevation)
February 1, 2020 – lake starts up from (1858.0 elevation)
March 1, 2020 – within 5 feet of Normal pool (1860.0 elevation)
May 1, 2020 – Normal summer pool (1865.0 elevation)

To receive a construction permit for new structures or for maintenance of existing structures, a construction application must be submitted to Georgia Power for approval.  Applications must be reviewed and approved by Georgia Power before starting construction. These applications can be found on our website at www.georgiapowerlakes.com.  During the drawdown, fluctuations in the level of the lake may occur daily due to generation, rainfall, or other events.  Therefore, equipment should not be left unattended.

If you have questions regarding the drawdown or if we can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to call our office at  (706) 746-1450.
