Popsicles in the Park
Lake Burton Civic Association Centennial Event
As part of Lake Burton’s centennial year, residents gathered Saturday, August 22, at Lake Burton Park to celebrate the construction of the Georgia Power dam and the lake’s formation. The Lake Burton Civic Association sponsored a “Popsicles in the Park” event where a centennial plaque was placed to commemorate the 100 years since the dam and lake’s completion.
“We’re excited to be here 100 years later and view the beauty and charm that Lake Burton brings to the Rabun County community,” comments Chip Groome, president of the LBCA. “This hundredth-year anniversary is clearly a special time in our history”.
The LBCA’s “Big Red” 1948 fire engine was in attendance, creating photo opportunities for visitors, young and not-so-young. A plaque was presented acknowledging those donors that contributed to this important symbol of the community. In addition, Mike Maffett, author of Our Southern Eden, a comprehensive book about Lake Burton and Rabun county, talked about the lake’s history with attendees and signed copies of his book.
